The Pelvic Floor and Exercise

The pelvic floor plays a vital role in our overall wellbeing and provides support for our pelvic organs such as the bladder, uterus and rectum. When we think about the pelvic floor, we often think about it being weak, however, for some people they have a tight pelvic floor also known as hypertonic pelvic floor. In this blog post we will explore the importance of the pelvic floor and how we can assist the pelvic floor with exercise.


What is the pelvic floor?


The pelvic floor refers to a group of muscles that form a hammock like structure around the base of the pelvis. They work together to provide stability, control and support of the pelvis organs. When these muscles don't function in the correct way, they can become tight or weak.


Common symptoms or presentation of pelvic floor dysfunction


  1. Urinary incontinence

  2. Fecal incontinence

  3. Pelvic organ prolapse.

  4. Constipation

  5. urgency

  6. pelvic pain and painful sex

Examples of Exercises to consider for a weak pelvic floor:


  1. Pelvic floor squeezes

  2. Bridges

  3. Squats

  4. Pilates based exercise.

Examples of Exercises to consider for a tight pelvic floor:


  1. Breathing techniques

  2. Hip opening exercises/stretches.

  3. Child's pose

  4. Happy baby pose
